- 1140-1160
Agia Sophia. Agia Sophia, the upper-city Byzantine church, was built around 1150 and remains the best-preserved monument of the upper town, later modified under Ottoman and Venetian use.
- 1200-1499
Monemvasia changed hands between Franks, Byzantines and Venetians, with each phase leaving fortification and church fabric across the lower city and the upper plateau.
- 1690-1715
The second Venetian period reshaped parts of the lower town, including the later Archaeological Collection building, and added administrative and military structures to the existing fabric.
- 1999
Archaeological Collection. The Monemvasia Archaeological Collection opened in a restored historic building on the lower town's main street, having served previously as a mosque, public building, prison and cafe.
