1. 1400-1797

   Venetian fortifications. Four centuries of Venetian rule produced the Old Fortress on the eastern peninsula and the wider fortification system defending the Adriatic entrance.

2. 1576-1645

   Tillbyggnad

   New Fortress. The New Fortress on Agios Markos hill closed the northwest edge of the old town in lower and upper levels designed for artillery defense.

3. 1800-1864

   Renovering

   British protectorate. Under the British protectorate the fortifications were repaired and partly rebuilt, and the town's housing stock took much of its present neoclassical character.
