Timeline
- 1200-1230
Sebastocrator Kaloyan enlarged the church and ordered a second, two-story building next to the 10th-century eastern church.
- 1259
The second church received the major fresco cycle, with donor images of Kaloyan and Desislava and portraits of Constantine Tikh Asen and Irene among the 1259 wall paintings.
- 1800-1830
A third western church was added at the beginning of the 19th century to complete the present tripartite ensemble.
- 1917
A park was created around the church and helped separate the property from the modern traffic that later grew up around it.
- 1996-2008
The church reopened to visitors in 2006 after a decade-long restoration;UNESCO reports conservation work completed in 2008.
