Data deletion

Last updated: 2026-05-07

You can delete your Acarta account and the personal data we hold about you at any time. This page explains exactly how, how long it takes, and what happens to backups. Acarta is operated by Väder AB, Stockholm, Sweden, under GDPR.

  1. § 01

    Delete from inside the app

    The fastest way to delete your account is from inside the Acarta mobile app:

    • Open the Acarta app on iPhone or Android.
    • Tap your profile in the bottom-right corner.
    • Tap the Settings icon (top-right).
    • Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account.
    • Confirm the deletion when prompted.

    Deletion happens in two phases:

    • Immediately active sessions are revoked, your profile is removed from public view, and your name and avatar disappear across the Service. Your photos and public contributions are re-attributed to "Deleted user".
    • After 30 days, if you have not signed back in to restore the account, all personal data is permanently scrubbed: email, display name, avatar, sign-in identifiers, check-ins, comments, notifications, and raw EXIF-bearing originals of your photos are deleted. The scrubbed user record is retained as an anonymous placeholder so your remaining contributions to the public guide (photos on place pages, places and architects you submitted, edit history) can stay attributed to "Deleted user" without any link back to you.

    You can restore the account during the 30-day grace period by signing in again with the same Apple or Google account.

    Encrypted backups are overwritten on the normal rolling rotation schedule after deletion.

  2. § 02

    Delete by email

    If you no longer have access to the app, you can request deletion by email. Send a message to hello@acarta.app with the subject line "Delete my account" from the email address associated with your account. We will verify your identity, delete the data within 30 days, and confirm by email when it's done.

    If you cannot send from the email address on the account (for example, because you lost access to it), include any other identifying information that lets us confirm the account is yours - for example the sign-in provider you used, the rough date you joined, and some of the places you checked in at.

  3. § 03

    What gets deleted (after the 30-day window)

    At the end of the 30-day grace period we permanently remove:

    • your profile - email, display name, avatar, bio, location, occupation, website;
    • your sign-in provider identifiers (Apple, Google);
    • your check-ins, check-in notes, and likes;
    • your comments and reactions (on check-ins and articles);
    • your maps, image collections, and saved places;
    • your follow graph (who you followed and who followed you), blocks, and reports you filed;
    • your notifications and push tokens;
    • your articles (editorial guides you authored);
    • your avatar image in Cloudflare R2;
    • the raw, EXIF-bearing original versions of your uploaded photos in Cloudflare R2;
    • GPS coordinates and capture timestamps stored with your photos;
    • your badge progress and demographics (age bracket, gender).

    Your subscription state with Apple or Google remains with the store itself - cancel from their account settings, because the subscription contract is between you and the store.

  4. § 04

    What stays in the public guide, anonymously

    Acarta is a community-curated guide. Content you contributed to the public guide is treated like a wiki edit - retained on a pseudonymized basis (GDPR Recital 26) so the guide stays intact for everyone else who uses it:

    • Photos attached to place galleries. The processed, resized, EXIF-stripped copy of each photo stays visible on the place page. The raw original (which may contain device and location metadata) is deleted. Attribution shows "Deleted user" with no link back to you.
    • Places and architects you submitted. Remain in the database, attributed to "Deleted user".
    • Edits and corrections to place data. The edit history is preserved with "Deleted user" as the author.

    If you want specific photos or contributions removed entirely rather than anonymized, delete them yourself from the app before deleting your account, or email hello@acarta.app with the specifics.

    We also retain, as allowed or required by law:

    • Encrypted backups. Deleted data may persist in encrypted backups for a short rolling window; those backups are overwritten on the normal rotation schedule.
    • Technical and security logs. Access logs (IP, user agent, path, timestamp) are retained for a rolling period of up to 30 days for abuse prevention, then deleted.
    • Billing records. Invoices and payment records that we are required to keep under Swedish accounting law are retained for the period required by law (normally seven years after the end of the financial year). These records are kept with our payment processors (Apple, Google, RevenueCat) rather than in our own database.
  5. § 05

    What is not deleted

    Deleting your Acarta account does not delete:

    • Your subscription with Apple or Google. If you had an active subscription, cancel it from your Apple ID or Google Play account settings. Acarta cannot cancel it on your behalf, because the contract is between you and the store.
    • Content you posted outside Acarta. If you shared a check-in to another service (for example Instagram), deleting your Acarta account will not remove that post from the other service. You need to delete it there.
    • Reference data. Place facts and images that are part of the shared dataset are not tied to your account. Deleting your account does not remove or modify them.
  6. § 06

    Response time

    Under GDPR we will complete the deletion of your personal data within 30 days of a valid request. In most cases we will do it much sooner than that. We will confirm by email when it is done.

    If we cannot locate an account from the information you provided, or if we need additional information to verify your identity, we will reply within that 30-day window to ask for what we need.
