Patmos carries an unusual UNESCO inscription: not a single monument but a whole Aegean island ensemble built around a fortified Byzantine monastery. Hosios Christodoulos Latrinos founded the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in 1088…
Timeline
- 1170-1199
Late 12th-century fresco phases survive in the Chapel of the Virgin and the refectory, belonging to the Byzantine decorative campaign of the monastery's first century.
- 1200-1699
Chora grew around the fortified monastery as one of the older Aegean hill settlements, absorbing refugees from Constantinople and Crete into successive quarters of religious and secular buildings.
- 1698
Tzafara arcade. The Tzafara, a two-storeyed dressed-stone arcade, closed the south side of the monastery's main courtyard.
