Successive Grand Masters thickened the landward defenses with round towers, a widened moat, revetted earthworks, and gun platforms to meet the new conditions of artillery warfare.

The six-month Ottoman siege damaged the fortifications;the new administration repaired the defenses without substantially altering the Hospitaller system.
