The Punic settlement was integrated into the Roman Empire and developed as a major provincial city across the early imperial period.
- 193-211
Septimius Severus, born at Leptis Magna, enlarged and embellished the city as the Severan forum, basilica, and triumphal arch, with harbor works reshaping the urban edge.
- 200-299
The third-century monumental phase defined the visible archaeological ensemble of forum, basilica, arch, market, baths, theatre, and harbor works.
- 1600-1799
Travellers recorded the ruins in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the site informed later European neoclassical taste.
- 2016-2026
The property was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2016 in response to the conflict situation in Libya, where it remains.
