Järntorget tram stop opened as the electric tramway network expanded through the western city.
- 1924
The tram layout was rebuilt and a turning loop was added on the square.
- 1986
The northern part of the square was renamed in memory of Olof Palme.
- 1999-2000
Major square rebuilding removed car traffic from the southern and eastern sides and removed the tram turning loop.
