- 1642
The first lock at the site, Drottning Kristinas sluss, was inaugurated to connect Saltsjön and Mälaren for shipping.
- 1755
Christopher Polhem's lock replaced the 1642 structure with an enlarged stone-and-timber chamber suited to growing inland traffic.

Nils Ericson's lock, inaugurated on 28 November 1850, replaced Polhem's chamber with a larger lock for the steamer-era fleet.
- 1931-1935
The 1935 traffic interchange, designed by Tage William-Olsson with engineer Gösta Lundborg and landscape architect Holger Blom, replaced the locks and bridges with a functionalist cloverleaf complex and the Karl Johansslussen chamber.
