Ubayd Allah ibn al-Habhab rebuilt the mosque after the foundation phase.
- 856-864
The Aghlabid campaign under Abu Ibrahim Ahmad expanded and refined the sanctuary;the mihrab-dome inscription records Fathallah as works director and dates the consolidated monument to 863.
- 983-992
Al-Mansur ibn Abi al-Futuh Yusuf ibn Ziri added the dome over the bahu and the portico before the prayer hall in the Fatimid and Zirid phase.
- 1250
Hafsid sultan al-Mustansir Billah connected the mosque to the Zaghouan aqueduct and restored the structural walls.
- 1419-1450
Hafsid library rooms were inserted around the courtyard and maqsura areas.
